When to Visit Zagreb

With a mild spring that includes only occasional rain and warm, dry summers, April through early October are the ideal months for visiting Croatia’s capital in terms of the weather. But when it comes to the best time to visit Zagreb, it really depends on your interests, budget, tolerance for crowds, and other factors. Based on our extensive experience spending time in the city and across Croatia, we’ve put together this guide showcasing when to visit Zagreb by season. Summer is the peak of the tourist season with July and August the busiest months. Many feel spring and fall (generally mid-September through mid-October) are particularly ideal with mild weather and fewer crowds but there are pros and cons to consider for each season.

Zagreb is best in late spring or early fall: the summer crowds haven’t arrived yet (or have already left), café terraces stay full into the evening, and you can walk the Upper Town without dodging tour groups.

April to May

Spring brings lots of color to the landscapes with flowers bursting in the parks and throughout the many green spaces in Zagreb. April will be on the cooler side with the average high temperature ranging from the upper 50s to low 60s but by May it’s often idyllic. Expect the mercury to hover around 70 degrees, perfect for sightseeing comfortably and without the thick tourist crowds of summer. This season is also popular for cultural festivals and if you’re planning on a day trip to Plitvice Lakes, the waterfalls will be flowing at their most powerful thanks to the snowmelt. The cooler conditions are also ideal for a variety of outdoor activities like kayaking and hiking in the mountains nearby.

June to August

The weather is the hottest and driest in the summer and there will be all sorts of activities to enjoy outdoors. That includes splashing around at Lake Jarun with its pebbly beach and vibrant café life making it feel like a day at the seaside. This is also the most popular time to visit Zagreb so be prepared for longer lines, larger crowds, and higher prices at most hotels and other types of accommodation. The farther you book in advance the better to avoid disappointment or paying exorbitant rates. There are several festivals that take place during the season, including the INmusic rock festival in June and July’s International Folklore Festival celebrating traditional Croatian culture and customs through theater, music and dance.

September to October

In mid-September, the crowds start to thin, it’s possible to find discounted accommodation and it’s usually easier to find cheaper airfare. While temperatures drop, the weather is usually quite pleasant. In early fall you can expect temperatures ranging from 59°F to 77°F, gradually decreasing as the season progresses. You can explore the cozy wooden stalls selling local crafts, delicious mulled wine, and traditional Croatian delicacies. While snow occasionally dusts the city, making it even more picturesque, indoor attractions like the Museum of Broken Relationships and the beautiful Zagreb Cathedral provide warmth and insight into the city’s history. With fewer tourists than during the summer, winter in Zagreb allows for a more intimate, relaxed exploration of its vibrant neighborhoods, cafes, and parks, all wrapped in a peaceful, wintery atmosphere.
