The Makarska Riviera runs for 60 kilometers along one of the most dramatic stretches of the Dalmatian coast, where the Biokovo Mountains rise almost vertically from the shoreline to peaks above 1,700 meters. The contrast between the limestone ridgeline and the water below it is striking in a way that sets this coastline apart from anywhere else in Croatia. The beaches here are pebble rather than sand — fine white pebble that stays cool underfoot and contributes to the clarity of the water. Punta Rata, on the forested cape just outside Brela, is consistently ranked among Europe’s finest, its pale stones shaded by century-old pines that reach almost to the waterline. Nugal Beach, accessible only on foot or by boat from Makarska, rewards the effort with a sheltered bay of cobalt water and very few visitors by comparison.

Makarska itself is the largest town on the Riviera, its 18th-Century Baroque cathedral anchoring a stone-paved square that fills up pleasantly in the evenings. But the quieter villages — Brela to the north, Tučepi to the south with its four-kilometer beach — offer more breathing room. Above it all, the Biokovo Skywalk juts out from a ridge at 1,228 meters on a glass-bottomed platform. On a clear day the view takes in Brač, Hvar, Vis, and on the best days, the Italian coast across the water.
