  Dubrovnik

  World-renowned for its starring role in various TV shows and Movies, Dubrovnik is every ounce the superstar that it claims to be. The city’s baroque architecture and limestone streets never fail to impress, whether seen up close on a walking tour or from the ancient weather-battered walls that wrap around it like some stoic protector. Stroll along the marina and the old town to appreciate the grandeur, and then ascend to the summit of Srd Hill via the cable car for an elevated perspective that illustrates the elegance of the countryside juxtaposed by the orange rooftops of the old town and those dreamy Adriatic blues.

  Split

  Stretched along the dreamy Dalmatian coast and backed by the emerald undulations of the Dinaric Alps, the delightful Split never fails to captivate. Stunning Diocletian’s Palace feels like a town within a town: a maze of old streets leading into atmospheric ruined squares lined with countless restaurants and bars serving up delicious Croatian cuisine in a uniquely atmospheric setting. Venture away from the old city walls, and the packed marina shows Split’s contemporary face and acts as an ideal jumping-off point for traveling to islands such as Brač and Hvar.

  Hvar

  Hvar’s inviting marina is frankly sublime, lined with yachts and backed by Hvar Town’s excellent restaurants and bars, and an old town that clambers skywards as a warren of uneven streets, little churches, local shops (fashions, arts and crafts, and more) and brilliant restaurants. Hike all the way to the top to see the impressive Fortica Fortress but linger for the fabulous views that show off the blissful majesty of the nearby Pekleni Islands rising like unpolished emeralds from those dreamy Adriatic blues. Charter a motorboat to explore them all, finding delightful coves and tiny breaks in the shore barely big enough to be called a beach but absolutely sublime in their seclusion.

  Kotor

  Montenegro’s stunningly romantic scenery is cinematic to the extreme — a coastline not too dissimilar to Croatia’s is swept to shore by vast Swiss-like mountains. But the most stunning of Montenegro’s sights is Kotor and the sublime Kotor Bay, protected by those towering mountains that lend an almost lake-like calmness to the water, ideal for sailors looking for a tranquil sail. The town is wedged into the mountains, an antique tangle of alleyways, churches, and squares, practically littered with quaint cafes, and, for such a quaint little place, a surprisingly raucous nightlife.
